Ethel and Edna are no more

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Ethel and Edna are missing and presumed dead since yesterday. The snow obviously brought predators a bit nearer the house than usual but there is no trace of a struggle so hopefully it was quick for them. As you can see in the pic we are used to them sitting on our windowsills looking in, a bit freaky for visitors to Red House, but a bit of company when you are on your own because they were the nosiest hens ever! We had just cured Ethel of her self harming habit which she had when she arrived to us ( i know I didn't believe it either and had to look it up on google!) I think we did this by letting them roam about all day even though they never left the top lawn near the house, however this was probably the reason why they got taken so what do you do? So a sad day for us. Ethel and Edna RIP.

If you didn't have your chooks shut up in a pen at night I would suspect a fox may have taken them. Poor darlings.

Oh Jenny I'm so sorry to hear about your chickens. One of mine suffered the same fate and its always very sad.
They are such fun to be around and I'm sure they'll be sadly missed.
Sending you a hug.

Sorry to hear about the girls..I lost 3 of mine this summer..for no apparent reason ..they'd just decided to go to the free range heaven in the sky..so yours will be there too..
However why is it that the stalwart hen that remains..Mrs Tweedy..has chosen now..to moult! she looks practically oven ready!!At least the Duck Downers are keeping her warm..there's 6 of them!

:-( so sorry to hear that. We lost a chicken the other week because of our dog but we have lost some to foxes in the past too. I think the foxes tend to come out early at this time of year, even in the afternoon so they may have got snatched then.
